In less than 5 hours, Steve Wiebe will take the stage at E3, and attempt to set a new world record on Donkey Kong.

If you haven’t seen King of Kong, it’s the story of Steve, a quiet science teacher who dreams of becoming the world’s best Donkey Kong player.

The one man standing in his way… is Billy Mitchell. A shiny-mulletted loudmouth who loves setting (many) retro arcade game records, selling his brand of hot sauce & talking himself up.

Just One More Game is firmly on Steve’s side, and that’s why I’ve created a completely unofficial “Go STEVE Go” wallpaper for your computer.

The artwork features many items from Donkey Kong, in an edited version of the final level. Appearing on either side of the “level” are silhouettes of Steve Wiebe giving the “fist of victory” in his famous garage. And – at the very top of the wallpaper, the “high score” appears as 1050200. That’s Billy Mitchell’s current world record, and the one to beat.

Download a wallpaper, install it today & barrack for the Wiebester!

Steve’s world record attempt will start at:

1am Wednesday (Australia/Eastern)
7pm Tuesday (UK/London)
8am Tuesday (USA/Pacific)
11am Tuesday (USA/Eastern)

Or translate to your local timezone from: (GMT) Tuesday at 18:00:00.

How to install your “Go Steve Go” wallpaper

1. Right-click & “save as” one of the files to your desktop.
2. Right-click on your desktop, then select “properties.. desktop..”
3. Hit “Browse” & navigate to the desktop.
4. Doubleclick the wallpaper file you downloaded
5. Change “position” to “centre/center”
6. Click OK

Brilliant! Now, when can I get this on a t-shirt? 🙂

Hadn’t thought of that… if he wins, I’ll update the “score” in the design, then it can be a commemorative thing.
(I’d also put today’s date in the “bonus” box)

I can hardly believe how many hours Wiebe spent playing that game during that one competition day; he must have been slamming the Red Bulls
