If you’re into retro, indie or coinop gaming, E3 isn’t usually for you.
But this year’s event had a few little retro-esque highlights worth sharing…
Donkey Kong Country (Wii) looks nice, with some ‘Little Big Planet-esque’ dual-plane action, and it’s in beautiful 2D!
Bionic Commando Rearmed was a nice retro reboot last year,
and the sequel is coming soon, with lots of over-the-top action…
And the game that introduced First Person Shooters to the PC-less crowd, Goldeneye… is being remade on the Wii. The one reason that I find this interesting is that the FPS genre is continually obsessed by pixel-count, yet this game will be quite the opposite. My god, imagine fun being more important than resolution!
WARNING: Skip the first 42 seconds unless you enjoy awful contrived introductions.
Oh, and to make it ‘3 out of 4’ for NINTENDO retro remakes in this post, it seems that The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is one of the games coming out for the new 3DS. Pics here.
Finally, an announcement about corporate/hardware deals that I’d usually ignore. The Steam platform is coming to the Playstation 3. I’m assuming this is mainly so that Valve’s ‘big name’ games can run on the console. But who knows, maybe a few indie titles will also be converted…?
If you noticed any cool retro/indie-esque E3 announcements, please mention ’em in the comments…
