Indie shmup generates mp3 bullet madness

Header: Shmusicup

Ok, this is a bit different.

Shmusicup is a hybrid of a rhythm/music game and a shoot’em up. It’s a vertical scrolling shooter (of the bullet-hell variety) where the enemy bullet patterns are generated by any mp3 chosen from the player’s music collection.

Youtube trailer below.

That said, Shmusicup is a terrible, terrible name for a game. Yes – it manages to sandwich the two genres into one title, but it takes the reader a moment to process it. Then – it takes them a moment to work out how to say it.

And to me, anything that potentially gets between ‘Gamer X’ telling ‘Gamer Y’ how cool your game looks is a bad, bad thing.

Name aside, it’s an interesting idea. And you can register your email to keep track of its development at the official Shmusicup site.

Shmusicup is the first game from a new studio, Tzai Entertainment, based in Singapore.

  1. Remarkably great idea, notably poor name. In other words, uh, I agree with what you said.

I think some devs consider names only in terms of “letters on a page or website”.
But a good product name is all about “saying it out aloud”.

Very interesting. Will give it a go when it comes out for sure.
