No R18+ rating for Australia, yet

Ok, I’ve had my bit of fun. Serious time now.

Australia’s eight attorneys general have just agreed to… delay a decision regarding an R18+ adult rating for videogames. Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor told Mark Serrels of Kotaku “Everyone agreed that things need to be changed with the rating system… We need to have a clear consensus on the guidlines and we’re on the right track…

So, there was progress. But not as much as many gamers hoped.

This decision means the 92% of “18+” (overseas) rated games that were ‘shoehorned’ into Australia’s M15/MA15+ rating in the past 5 years… will still be shoehorned for a little bit longer.

Still – we’re a lot closer than we were… even 4 weeks ago. Thankyou to the many, many Aussie gamers, journalists, bloggers, game devs & industry reps who’ve worked so hard… so far.

I’m sure I’ll forget a few big contributors – and I apologise – but I’d like to at least acknowledge Seamus Byrne, Mark Serrels, Laura Parker & Jason Hill.

It will happen. Time is on our side.

  1. Pretty sick of how long this whole thing has been going on. A lot of games have been released as M15+ when they should have been R in the first place.

It’s not really that some adults miss out on games they want to play, but its kids playing games that SHOULD be out of their reach is the problem!
