C’mon baby, do the Locomalito…

July 26, 2010

JustOneMoreGame - header - Hydorah

You gotta swing your hips now…
(Sorry. Right year – wrong smash hit)

1987.

Around the world, gamers are battling the Bydo empire in Irem’s R-Type. And in a little Spanish arcade… a young boy has made it all the way to the last level! (Respect! I never made it further than level 4. -Ed) He’s excited. He’s hitting the buttons. He’s screaming at the enemies. And all the while, some bemused teenagers are laughing at him. “What a loco-malito!” they said. (If your Spanish is a little rusty, it means “little sick mad kid”.)

Vectorman and more Game On 2.0 arcade glimpses

July 4, 2010

Wow, nice work by ABCTV Tasmania.

Here’s an interview with Vectorman, (aka John Yates from Illinois) who has a collection of more than 1,000 (faint!) arcade cabs and pinball machines.

The interview, at Game On 2.0, also includes a few glimpses of the arcade machines at the exhibition. Gauntlet! Out Run upright! Fantastic…

World first! Unpacking Game On 2.0

June 30, 2010

Many J-OMG readers would have attended, or at least read about Game On. It’s a ‘history of gaming’ travelling show that originated at The Barbican museum in London.

The new 2.0 version of Game On is about to celebrate its world debut in Inveresk (Launceston, Tasmania) this Saturday. After that, it’s going to Greece. Following that… USA? UK? ASIA?

Oh, and that “2.0” isn’t some ‘marketing’ thing. The whole show has been updated. (NEW GAMES!)

This week, we’ll be doing a bit of a ‘Game On frenzy’ at J-OMG.

Let’s kick things off with the world’s first look… behind-the-scenes at Game On 2.0!

News Flash – Armalyte (PC) – WILL be a download!

April 29, 2010

First of all, thanks to Rock Paper Shotgun for featuring our Armalyte coverage yesterday. If you’ve somehow missed it.. RPS is a top-class blog for PC Gamers, and run by really nice guys to boot.

Now, the news…

In the RPS Armalyte remake comments yesterday, many visitors expressed a disappointment with the lack of a digital download option. (Currently, only a ‘deluxe boxed version’ is available)

This morning, S-A-S programmer StuC gave a quick update on the situation..
Apparently the publisher has been swamped with ‘can we have a digital download?’, so he’s decided to have one. (It will be released at) a reduced price as a) There’s no packaging b) It will be the game only – no extras. Price TBA, but we’re looking at no more than a fiver (£5/US$7.50). I’ll post more details when I get them.”

Hopefully, the many people preferring a cheaper ‘no frills’ Armalyte option will vote with their credit card/paypal when the time is right…

Wikipedia + Myst x Teletext = PlayPen

April 20, 2010

“Draw here”.
Never have two words lead to such creativity and fun!

PlayPen is the latest ‘thing’ from Farbs, the Aussie indie game maker known for things like Captain Forever, RomCheckFail & resigning from his job: via a spot-on recreation of Super Mario Bros.

Do these guys ever sleep?

April 8, 2010

Trevor ‘Smila’ Storey has just popped up on the Retro Remakes forums, telling us of his next project with Stuart Collier! That’s after their C64 remake Scarabaeus. Which is after their work on Final Ninja. They must be on RedBull IV drips or something.

Anyway, quoting the man himself…

“[Our next project is] a first person arcade with loads of arcade clones to play about on. The main room and outdoor areas are built…”

Here’s an early render of the outside of the building…

At last, the answer is NOT Tony Danza…

April 7, 2010

Back in February, I wrote a guestblog on Fairfax Media’s SCREEN PLAY. Opposites Attract was all about games where you get to play “the other”. Not necessarily a baddie – just the opposite of the ‘usual’ role, in a particular genre.

One game I mentioned, Boss Rush, was still ‘in development’ at the time.

BUT NOW IT’S OUT… and ready to play online…
