The story behind Retro Gamer’s type-in game

May 28, 2012

Retro Gamer magazine celebrated its 100th issue recently, with an utterly fantastic double-release.

Highlights included a Sonic ‘Making of’ with Yuji Naka, an interview with David Braben about Elite, a fascinating technical piece by David Crane on how he made the Atari 2600 do impossible things, plus a full reprinted magazine of the rare-as-hen’s teeth RG issue 1.

Oh, and a type-in game.

More Raiding, Less Bungeling: Thanks Will Wright!

March 13, 2011

header: Raid on Bungeling Bay

Last week, gaming legend Will ‘Sim City’ Wright spoke at GDC (the Game Development Conference) about his first full game, Raid on Bungeling Bay.

VVVVVV being demade… to the C64!

Wow.

Indie-hit VVVVVV (err, that’s 6 x ‘V’, not 3 x ‘W’, if you were wondering) is now being demade from it’s original PC platform, to the Commodore 64.

Matching the sound/graphics of the original won’t be too hard; but getting the item placement and controls right… will be crucial.

There’s already a demo available, so fire up your favourite C64 emulator, and get playing!

By the way the original game is STILL available for just US$5, from the author’s site. I’m about 40% through it, and it’s great fun.

Really raving about Raid on Bungeling Bay

August 26, 2010

You might have noticed a recent J-OMG post regarding the final issue of Retroaction. Downloaded the PDF yet? Had a read through?

If you haven’t, let me entice you a bit.

Further down this post, you’ll find a big stitched-together panorama of my ‘Raid on Bungeling Bay’ article. I’ve made it…to give you an idea of Retroaction’s quality of page composition. I think Neil the editor did an incredible job with Retroaction. Many other retro PDF magazines (*including ones that charge money!) could learn a lot.
