You scratch my Pac… I scratch yours.

March 30, 2009

When Pacman was released in the early 80’s, there was a tonne of merchandise, both official & unofficial. T-shirts, lunchboxes, a hit song…

And after a few years, it all disappeared.

It wasn’t until about 2000, when MAME got people playing old games again on their PC, that “Pacman Fever” started infecting pop culture again.

Today we have the latest appearance by Pacman…
This time… in just one Australian state… you can buy your own…

Saatchify an Ad! Make a Million!

March 27, 2009

OK, not games related, but I had to post this.

Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney has taken the classic Cadbury UK “Gorilla” ad, deleted Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight, and replaced it with John Farnham’s You’re the Voice.

This is the result. Oh dear.

So now… THE CHALLENGE IS ON!

Let’s “Saatchify” some more famous non-Australian ads!
It’s easy! Just follow these steps!

Quick update

March 25, 2009

Sorry for the quiet period recently at J-OMG.

I’ve been busy working on some exciting “long term” J-OMG plans.

This includes…

  • A massive “retro remaker” interview
  • A game project I’ll be developing/blogging right here on J-OMG
  • A few “big features”
  • A sequel to “BackGames” (the original will be hard to beat, it peaked at 70x our normal daily traffic!)
  • And… today I was interviewed by an Aussie IT journos website.

In the meantime, here’s a few cool links I’d love to share with you:

March 19, 2009

Yep – posts at J-OMG are like buses.
Wait ages for one, then TWO arrive together! 😀

Now, you’ve probably seen “wall decals” depicting classic arcade characters before.
Mario, Pacman, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders…

But today we have one with a slight twist…

World’s smallest “working” cocktail arcade game?

March 19, 2009

First of all, sorry for the short break in posting.
(As usual, I’ve been busy working on a number of large stories – that are all taking time!)

Now, back to a bite-sized post of retro/coinop goodness.

Like the world’s smallest “working” cocktail cab…

Anyone for a “New in Box” Robotron cocktail/table game?

March 10, 2009

  1. Robotron is a very popular early 80’s arcade videogame.
  2. The cocktail (table) version is very desirable.
  3. One in good condition would be even more desirable.
  4. One that’s “New in Box” would be off the charts.

Of course, finding a “new in box” arcade game from 27 years ago would be impossible… wouldn’t it…?

Sorry for the delay.
Here is one extra-chunky-with-double-toppings post – and – I’ve got a bonus Retro Remakes feature coming soon…

Category 4 was “A Game for Helen”.

Entrants were challenged to write “games can bring some entertainment to lots of people with a wide range of abilities – due to their accessibility”.

First look: ASCIIpOrtal

March 4, 2009

Yes yes, we know about the flash/2D version of Portal.

But here’s something even more creative. An ASCII* version of Portal.
(ASCII = the very basic character graphics on a PC)

Type-in game enthusiast Cymon is the man responsible, and you can track progress of ASCIIpOrtal via (link removed – no longer available) at Retro Remakes.

It’s “early days” yet, but he has uploaded a small proof-of-concept.

Now, have a look another peek at that screenshot.
Will you ever look the same way at inverse heart characters again? 🙂
